Lisbon runs on golden light and gravity. Every walk is a climb and every climb ends at a miradouro — a terrace with a view, a kiosk, and a €1.50 glass of wine. The city wears its age beautifully: azulejo tiles peeling just so, fado drifting out of Alfama doorways, and pastel de nata warm from ovens that have not changed recipe in a century. It has been discovered, loudly, but slip out to Marvila's breweries or take the ferry to Cacilhas at sunset and the old, unhurried Lisbon is still right there.

Must know before you go

Wear real shoes — the calçada cobblestones are slick and steep.
Tram 28 is lovely and also the pickpocket capital of Iberia; ride early morning.
The 'couvert' bread and olives aren't free — wave them off if you don't want them.
Dinner starts late; kitchens are empty at 7pm and alive at 9.

Europe's best city for people who count their euros

Good: A €1.50 glass of wine at a miradouro at sunset is the whole value proposition of travel in one transaction. Ate brilliantly for under €15 a day without ever trying to suffer for it.
Bad: The hills are a tax you pay in calves, and the Baixa-to-Alfama corridor is pricing itself toward the cruise crowd fast — two more years and this review reads differently.
Verdict: Go now if your budget does the deciding; skip peak summer or you'll share every viewpoint with three tour flags.

Golden light, shared with several thousand friends

Good: The azulejo facades and a fado set in a tiny Alfama room were everything we hoped — the city wears its age like nobody else in Europe.
Bad: June was a mistake: tram 28 was a sardine tin with pickpocket garnish, and Alfama at midday moves at cruise-group shuffle speed.
Verdict: Couples chasing atmosphere should come in October and stay in Graça; June visitors should make peace with the crowds before landing.
