Azulejo Tile-Painting Workshop

Lisbon· Portugal

8.9

A ceramicist couple runs this out of their São Bento studio: twenty minutes of tile history on the street, then two hours at the bench learning the cobalt brushwork that covers half the city. Your tile gets kiln-fired properly, which means collecting it in two days or paying shipping — plan for that. The pace is quiet and absorbed; if you want a party, this isn't it.

Two absorbed hours and the best souvenir I own

Good
The cobalt brushwork is harder and more meditative than it looks, and the couple teaching it correct you like they genuinely want your tile to outlive you. Mine hangs in my kitchen.
Bad
Kiln firing means collecting your tile two days later or paying real shipping — plan it early in your stay, not the afternoon before your flight like the couple beside me.
Verdict
Slow travelers and makers should book the first bench of the trip; anyone wanting a lively social activity will find this closer to a library than a party.
