Tokyo

The city that perfected everything

Tokyo is what happens when a metropolis of 37 million decides that every detail matters. Trains arrive to the second, a ¥1,000 bowl of ramen can outclass a tasting menu, and ten minutes from any screaming intersection there is a shrine garden where the loudest sound is gravel underfoot. It rewards wanderers: pick a neighborhood — Yanaka's old alleys, Shimokitazawa's vintage shops, Golden Gai's two-seat bars — and simply walk. You will not run out of city. Nobody ever has.

Best time to go

Peak season
Late Mar – Apr (cherry blossom) & Oct – Nov
Sweet spot
Late May and early December

Sakura season is glorious and mobbed — book stays four months out. June–August is hot, humid and stormy; December is crisp, bright and underrated.

What a day really costs

Shoestring

$55/day

Mid-range

$150/day

Luxe

$450/day

Per person, all-in — beds, meals, transit and the stuff you'll actually buy, not the fantasy version with free everything.

Where to base yourself

Shinjuku

Neon, nightlife, transit hub

Stay west side for calm, east side for chaos.

Yanaka

Old Tokyo, temples, cats

Go at opening time and have breakfast at the market street.

Shimokitazawa

Vintage, coffee, small venues

Best on weekday afternoons — weekends get crushed.

Ginza

Polished, galleries, department food halls

Depachika basement food floors beat most restaurants.

Must know before you go

  • Carry cash — plenty of small restaurants still don't take cards.
  • Get a Suica/Pasmo card immediately; it works on every train, bus and konbini.
  • Restaurants with plastic food displays are often excellent, not tourist traps.
  • Tipping is not done and can cause genuine confusion.

Pick a district, walk, repeat

Good
Ten days and I never once needed a plan: Yanaka at 7am, a shrine garden behind every screaming intersection, and trains so punctual they reorganize your brain.
Bad
Sakura season means hotel rates double and the famous spots run at rock-concert density by 10am. I queued 40 minutes for a garden I had to myself the next morning at opening.
Verdict
Culture wanderers should give it a lifetime; anyone who needs their trip pre-scheduled and English-first will feel the friction.

The best-run city my expense report ever met

Good
Meetings across three districts in one day and I was early to all of them. Solo counter dinners are a gift to the business traveler — nobody blinks, everybody feeds you brilliantly.
Bad
Hotel rooms at every price point are a size smaller than the photos promise, and my jet lag lost every negotiation with the 4:45am sunrise.
Verdict
Ideal for anyone who values things simply working; claustrophobes should budget for a suite category up.
