Tsukiji Outer Market Breakfast Crawl

Tokyo· Japan

8.8

The inner auction moved to Toyosu, but the outer market kept the soul: knife shops, charcoal-grilled scallops, and tamagoyaki flipped by fourth-generation hands. Guides are ex-fishmongers who know which queue is worth it and which is Instagram inertia. Fair warning — you'll be eating raw fish at 8am and standing the whole time, and Saturdays are elbow-to-elbow.

Raw tuna at 8am is a personality upgrade

Good
An ex-fishmonger guide who knew which queue was worth it and which was Instagram inertia — the tamagoyaki stop alone rewired my breakfast standards.
Bad
Three hours entirely on your feet in January cold, and even the 'quiet' Tuesday slot had us single-filing through the knife-shop lane by stop five.
Verdict
Foodies should book the earliest weekday slot and skip dinner the night before; anyone who won't eat standing in a crowd should self-tour at 7am instead.
