Pylsuvagninn við Höfnina

Miðborg (101)Reykjavík

8.7

A hatch by the old harbor serving the national dish — a lamb-blend hot dog with crispy and raw onion, ketchup, sweet mustard and remoulade — to fishermen at 7am and everyone else until 1am. In a country where dinner can cost like a car payment, this is the great equalizer. There is no seating and the wind is a personality; eat facing away from the sea like the locals do.

The great Icelandic equalizer, wind included

Good
One with everything, eaten facing away from the sea like the fishermen do, four days running — in a country of car-payment dinners this cart kept me solvent and happy.
Bad
There is no seating and the February wind is a co-diner with opinions; my remoulade froze slightly on day three, which felt personal.
Verdict
Every budget traveler should make this a daily ritual without shame; anyone wanting to sit down indoors is at the wrong national monument.
