Palais Layali

HivernageMarrakesh

7.9

A restored palace where dinner comes with gnawa musicians, a fountain courtyard and enough rose petals to reupholster a car. The royal couscous and the lamb mechoui are genuinely good; a couple of the middle courses coast on the setting. Come for a celebratory night with the spectacle priced in, not for the city's best cooking — that's in the clay urns across town at a tenth the bill.

Book it for the spectacle, grade it as theater

Good
Gnawa musicians circling the fountain courtyard while the mechoui arrived — as a celebratory night of pure atmosphere, it absolutely delivers what it advertises.
Bad
Two of the middle courses were clearly coasting on the rose petals, and the bill lands at ten times what the transcendent tangia across town costs.
Verdict
Anniversary couples who price in the show will leave happy; anyone hunting Marrakesh's best cooking should eat at the clay-urn places and see a music show separately.
