Marigny Gumbo House

MarignyNew Orleans

8.5

A shotgun-house dining room where the chicken-and-andouille gumbo starts from a roux taken the color of scorched mahogany, and Monday means red beans and rice because the calendar still works here. Between sets on Frenchmen Street, half the horn section is at the counter. The room runs hot, the sweet tea runs sweeter, and the kitchen closes at 9pm sharp even when the street outside is just warming up.

Order this

  • Chicken and andouille gumbo
  • Red beans and rice (Monday)
  • Fried okra
  • Bread pudding with whiskey sauce

The dishes reviewers keep coming back for. Ordering off-list is on you.

Half the horn section was at the counter. Correct.

Good
A roux the color of scorched mahogany, red beans because it was Monday, and trombone players ordering between sets two blocks off Frenchmen — the whole city in one shotgun room.
Bad
The kitchen closes at 9pm sharp while the street outside is just tuning up, and the room runs hot enough that the sweet tea is load-bearing.
Verdict
Eat here early, then walk to the music with the right foundation; night owls who dine at ten will find the lights off and deserve the lesson.
