Colosseum Underground, Arena Floor & Palatine

Rome· Italy

8.6

This is the version of the Colosseum worth planning around: down into the hypogeum where the animal lifts and gladiator corridors survive, out onto the reconstructed arena floor, then up the Palatine for the view back. The archaeologist guides are the real thing and take questions seriously. Caveat: three and a half hours on uneven ancient stone is a workout, and summer afternoons on the arena floor are brutal — take a morning slot.

The tunnels where the roar came from

Good
Standing in the hypogeum where the animal lifts ran, with an archaeologist fielding our nerdiest questions like she'd been waiting for them — regular tickets see a different, lesser building.
Bad
Three and a half hours on uneven ancient stone is real exercise, and the 30-day booking window for underground slots means setting an actual alarm to buy tickets.
Verdict
History people should organize their whole Rome trip around securing this slot; casual visitors happy with the postcard exterior can save the money and the calf work.
