7.2from 610 ratings

You have seen this hotel: the block-long iron balconies, the fern-hung courtyard, the doormen in livery. It appears in every montage of the city, and the lobby genuinely earns the postcards. The rooms have not kept pace — dated furnishings, thin walls a bachelorette party can defeat, and Bourbon Street's bass line runs until 3am on the street side. It trades hard on the name, and enough people accept the trade to keep the price up.

Why it earns the score

A legendary facade renting ordinary rooms; stay for the lobby, sleep somewhere else.

Stay for the lobby. Sleep literally anywhere else.

Good
The fern-hung courtyard and block-long balconies really are the postcard, and a nightcap in the lobby bar is a genuinely grand half hour.
Bad
Our 'renovated' room had a wheezing AC unit and walls that relayed a bachelorette party in full dramatic detail until 3am, with Bourbon Street on bass duty underneath.
Verdict
Photograph it, drink in it, then sleep in the Garden District; the name on the awning is doing all the heavy lifting and the beds know it.
