Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike & South Coast Day

Reykjavík· Iceland

8.8

Three hours on Sólheimajökull's ridged blue ice — crevasses, moulins, volcanic ash bands — bracketed by Seljalandsfoss (walk behind it, get soaked, no regrets) and Skógafoss. Guides are certified and cautious; the glacier is retreating fast enough that they'll show you where it stood the year you were born. You need to handle three hours of uneven walking in crampons, and Icelandic sideways rain cancels for wind, not for wet.

They showed me where the ice stood the year I was born

Good
Three hours on ridged blue ice reading ash bands like tree rings, guided by people who treat crampons and climate with equal seriousness. Walking behind Seljalandsfoss soaked and grinning was the bonus round.
Bad
Eleven hours door to door is a real day, and Icelandic sideways rain does not trigger a cancellation — only wind does. Dress like you believe them.
Verdict
Anyone with functioning knees and waterproofs should do this once; travelers wanting a gentle photo stop should take the south coast bus and wave at the glacier instead.
