Kawarau Bridge Bungy Jump

Queenstown· New Zealand

8.7

This is the original — the 1880s gold-rush bridge where commercial bungy was invented — and the crew's safety choreography is so polished it almost calms you down. Almost. The 43-meter drop over turquoise river is the classic first jump, and asking for a water touch gets your hands wet at the bottom of the arc. Be honest with yourself: the hard part is the ledge, not the fall, and no one on the platform can do that part for you. Photos and video cost extra, and everyone buys them anyway.

The hard part is the ledge. It's supposed to be.

Good
The crew's calm choreography walked my body off a bridge my brain had vetoed, and the water-touch at the bottom of the arc is the cleanest hit of alive I've ever bought.
Bad
The photo-and-video package costs like a second jump and everyone buys it anyway; budget for it upfront instead of pretending you won't.
Verdict
First-time jumpers should do the original and ask for the water touch; anyone on the fence should at least take the spectator deck — the screaming is free.
