False Bay Kelp Forest Snorkel with Seals

Cape Town· South Africa

8.4

You slip into the same golden kelp forest a certain famous octopus made world-famous, with Cape fur seals barrel-rolling past and pyjama sharks (harmless, gorgeous) resting under the fronds. The 7mm wetsuits are serious and so is the guiding — max eight swimmers, always accompanied. The Atlantic-fed water sits at 12–16°C and the first two minutes take your breath; visibility can drop after big swells, and honest operators will reschedule rather than take your money into soup.

The first two minutes steal your breath. Fair trade.

Good
Golden kelp columns with seals barrel-rolling past close enough to feel the wake, and a guide who read the swell like text. The pyjama sharks are gorgeous and could not care less about you.
Bad
Thirteen-degree water through a 7mm wetsuit still arrives like a verdict, and my first-choice day was postponed for visibility — build a spare day into your plan.
Verdict
Confident swimmers should book early in their trip for weather flex; anyone who hates cold water should trust that feeling and take the penguin walk instead.
