Auntie Fadela's Kitchen

Bo-KaapCape Town

8.7

Six tables in the front room of a rose-pink Bo-Kaap house where Auntie Fadela cooks the Cape Malay canon her grandmother taught her: denningvleis sharp with tamarind, chicken breyani under a proper crust, koesisters on Sunday mornings only. She'll quiz you on your spice tolerance and she will be right. No alcohol, cash preferred, and closed during Ramadan evenings — check before you climb the hill.

She quizzed our spice tolerance. She was right.

Good
Denningvleis sharp with tamarind in a rose-pink front room, breyani under a proper crust, and Auntie Fadela's running commentary worth the hill climb on its own.
Bad
Six tables and no alcohol means this is an early, intimate, dry evening — and we nearly bounced off a Ramadan closure because we didn't check ahead like she tells everyone to.
Verdict
Food travelers should book the moment flights are confirmed; anyone whose dinner requires wine and anonymity should admire the Bo-Kaap from a restaurant below.
